பொற்கோ என்று அன்போடு அழைக்கப்படும் முனைவர் பொன் கோதண்டராமன் , ஆராய்ச்சி மாணவர் நிலையில் ஆய்வுக்கட்டுரைகளை ஆய்வரங்கில் வழங்கி ஐம்பது ஆண்டுகளுக்கு முன்பே அமெரிக்க நாட்டுப் பேராசிரியர் எம் .பி எமெனோ போன்ற அயல்நாட்டு அறிஞர்களின் பாராட்டைப் பெற்றவர் .

இங்கிலாந்திலும் அமெரிக்காவிலும் ஜப்பானிலும் தென் ஆப்பிரிக்காவிலும் 1970 முதல் பல்வேறு கருத்தரங்குகளிலும் கலந்துரையாடல்களிலும் பங்குபெற்றுத் தமிழ் மொழியைப் பற்றியும் தமிழ் இலக்கியங்களைப் பற்றியும் தமிழ்ப் பண்பாட்டைப் பற்றியும் சரியான புரிதல் ஏற்படத் தொடர்ந்து பணியாற்றுபவர் .

சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தில் துணைவேந்தர் நிலையில் மற்ற இன்றியமையாத பணிகளோடு தமிழ் மேம்பாட்டுத்தளத்தையும், தொல்காப்பிய அறக்கட்டளையையும் தமிழ் மன்றத்தையும் முறையாக உருவாக்கித் தமிழுக்கு வலிமை சேர்த்திருப்பவர் ,

தமிழுக்குச் செவ்வியல் மொழி என்ற தகுதியை வழங்கி நிலைப்படுத்த முறைப்படி சென்னைப் பல்கலைக்கழகத்தின் ஆட்சி மன்றமும் கல்வி மாமன்றமும் பேரவையும் தீர்மானம் நிறைவேற்ற 2001ஆம் ஆண்டில் வழிவகை செய்து முறைப்படி அதை நிறைவேற்றியவர் .

Pon. Kothandaraman popularly known as 'Portko' is essentially a poet. He studied Tamil Language, literature and South Indian History for his Pulavar and B.O.L. programmes, worked on Bengali Language and Dravidian Phonology during his M.A., programme and completed a Transformational Generative Grammar of Tamil and Telugu for his Doctoral programme. He has authored several volumes of books. He has taught Linguistics and Tamil at Annamalai University and SOAS of London University in the early 70's.

As a UNESCO Fellow, he visited State University of New York at Stony Brook and Northwestern University at Evanston and audited their advanced courses in Literary Studies during 1973-74. He was Associate Professor at the International Institute of Tamil Studies, Madras in the middle 70's. Since 1977 he is on the teaching staff of the University of Madras. He was visiting Professor in the programme for a Comparative Study of Tamil and Japanese at Gakushuin University, Tokyo in 1990, 1993 and 1996. His interests include Poetics, Theory of Literature, Grammar and Comparative Study of Tamil and Japanese.

Dr Portko was the Vice-Chancellor of the prestigious University of Madras between 1999-2002 and under his leadership the University attained distinctions including “University of Excellence” status from the University Grants Commission(UGC) and the highest level of accreditation (5 Stars) from the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC).

With this background he is also occasionally expressing his views in certain aspects of Tamil Culture.
